Michael Phelps on the question of "only" (journalists attitude, not mine or his) coming in third in the men's 200 free:

"How could I be disappointed? I swam in a field with the two fastest freestylers of all time and I was right there with them. I'm extremely happy with that. It's my best time, a new American record, and coming in I wanted to do a best time and race those guys and that's what I did. It's the first time I've been able to race those guys and it was fun. I had fun doing it."

You go, Michael! And journalists, stop acting like coming in third is a bad thing already! He's medaled and swam personal bests in every event he's entered so far! If that's not what the Olympics are about, I don't know what is!

ETA: In case you didn't know, TWoP has set up an Olympics Forum and it's *great*. It's snarky and fun and informative. Definitely worth a check.

Plus, this line from ashanta over there kills me:

In other news, the Olympics have finally made me realize just how shallow and perverted I am. Thanks, Olympics!

That needs to be on a T-shirt. LOL!

I saw Michael say this on the "Today" show this morning. Reporters are stupid jerks. I thought his answer was perfect and spoken with sincerity. It wasn't one of those "oh it was an honor just to be nominated" lines of crap that no one ever believes anyway. He honestly meant what he said. Good for him for not obsessing about winning all the goldsd and enjoying the experiences he's having.

An NPR reporter was saying basically the same thing about the ridiculous whining over him winning bronze. I sometimes wonder if most americans get the whole spirit of the olympics.

My love for Phelps is pure.
