...Find out what it means to *me*....

Ya know, I figure what the heck--I can't talk about people not defining respect to Jensen and Jared if I'm not gonna put my money where my mouth is and say how I define it.

I have a pretty broad definition of respect, and maybe it only applies to me, but here it is.

On the occasions that I'm lucky enough to meet the guys, I will:
1. Be nice. Don't jump up and say things to them like like, "Jesus, Jensen...Ten Inch Hero looks like it really sucks ass. What the hell?"

2. Respect the personal space--yes, putting an arm around them during a photo op is fine. Attempting to climb Jared like a tree is not.

3. Smile, be polite. Remember my manners--please and thank you.

4. Not attempt to fob fandom onto them. In other words, no showing fan art, fan fics, asking if they post/read at boards, etc. Just because they mention fanfic doesn't mean they are browsing online fandom.

5. Not jockey for more facetime. This mean, no 15 part questions in Q&A's, no chasing down hotel rooms, etc.

And the thing is, this is the stuff I've *always* done, in every fandom. And so do the majority of people from what I've seen, so that's probably why I'm kind of "Respect causes? The hell?" Because honestly, I don't think being critical on an interview, or saying you like it when it looks like Jensen has a double chin is disrespectful, nor more importantly do I think the guys even are aware of it or care about it. I'm sure because I said "Hee--I think an extra 10-15 pounds on Jensen would look great" that Jensen is neither saying, "All right! Free pass not to work out" and inhaling cheeseburgers or purging into the toilet sobbing about how he can't get fat like that. I'm sure he's more likely thinking, "I'm gonna get up, go to work, come home, and sleep with my girlfriend. The end." My thoughts, and the thoughts of most of fandom, are really not a blip on the guy's radar screen more than likely. Fandom is *not* as important to them as it is to us. We deal with it daily. They are exposed briefly to it occasionally.

So all I'm saying is, for me, if you treat the guys when you meet them like you were raised right, the online stuff gets outweighed, since actually meeting fans face to face is where they're gonna get 98% of their impressions of their fans.

The end. :)

OMG.

Thank you.

Seriously.

Thank.You.

No prob.

I mean, the thing is, 99.9% of fans *do* act like that when they meet them, at least the ones I've seen. Every con is gonna have the one or two incidents that make you go all *facepalm*, but in person I've rarely witnessed anything other than decent behavior to them.

So it's like, call it what it is--people generating stuff in online fandom that *you* (generic you) don't want to see, be it Wincest or Chubby!Jensen. Which is fine, but don't dress it up as "OMG, won't someone think about the boys??" Cause honestly, I don't really think the boys are thinking about what we post at all.

I've seen a couple of different people post stuff about this...where the hell is all this coming from?? And...seriously, THE FUCK??? Who has their panties in a wad? And over what now??

Honestly?

I have no fuckin' clue. Yesterday there was all this stuff about how the boys aren't being respected...but no specifics were mentioned, just this whole thing about "Use this icon and show you stand up for respecting Jensen and Jared--but I'm not gonna define what I mean by that because it's different for everyone." Which to me is just about as pointless as "Everybody Gets a Trophy Day" because it accomplishes nothing when the crazies get to wave the same flag as the non crazies.

But everyone keeps talking about how there's this great tidal swell of disrespect toward the guys, and I can't find nary a incident of it. Unless people are saying it's:

1. People having the opinion that Ten Inch Hero looks kind of crappy.
2. The Chubby Jensen picspams
3. The dumb "Jensen would have answered better" chick at CreationCon.
4. ???

I mean really--I haven't seen anything, and I've trolled the journals and friends lists of known shit-stirrers and I'm still not finding anything.

I personally think what it involves is someone posted something (I dunno--Wincest art, Chubby Jensen picspam, etc) that someone else didn't like, and it turned into "OMG Disrespect to the Boys!" instead of what it actually is, which was "OMG, I Don't Like That!"

Cause I sure as hell can't find anything...

Chubby Jensen picspam? Ha. Are their such photos? The boy is SLENDER as hell. I feel the need to see these now!!!

I've seen the icon and post that goes along with it...*is massively confused*

TIH looks crappy? Uh, what about Devour, Cry Wolf, House of Wax, about 7/8 of all Kiefer's movies? Sometimes movies blow, deal with it. Doesn't mean we won't go and see it or rent it or buy it, you know? And it's our OPINION that it blows. Maybe Jensen thinks it's good. His right to feel that way. I think I'm too pretty for jail (MY OPINION), not everyone else thinks that. Are they not respecting me? *eye roll* God, what is up with people in this fandom? Are other fandoms this wacky?

Do you think that people think because it's clear that Kripke & Co have probably trolled online and responded to the fan's thoughts, for instance, regarding Jo that they think the boys troll too? And thus have decided it's time to "be nice" (so to speak)? Like OMG, what if they see the icon where Jared's giving it to Jensen in the ass??? What will they think?? That we've disprected them? More likely that some fans are batshit insane more than anything. Like you said before, fans as a whole are barely a blip on their radar. I know they appreciate the fans and know they wouldn't be anywhere without us, but, come on. We really don't "matter" in most areas of their life, you know? (That made sense in my head, on the screen here? Not so much, sorry.)

RE: Creation Con girl saying Jensen would answer better...LET IT GO. Jesus. I think she just got flustered at first and it all snowballed. But what about the loud mouths who kept yelling shit from their sheets? Isn't that disprespectful too? What about them??

I don't know, it all makes my head hurt. I'm off to objectify Jensen now...where are the ass shots????

Oh wait, is that disrespectful?? Oops.

Chubby Jensen picspam? Ha. Are their such photos? The boy is SLENDER as hell. I feel the need to see these now!!!

Haha--well, see, that's how the whole thing got turned around. It was never people *seriously* thinking Jensen was fat. It started off as...well, you know how Jensen has that little chin thing where sometimes it looks like he has a double chin? You know, like this. I mean, I know that's a bad example because he's lying down, but you know what I mean. Hell, everyone used to coo about it at TWoP ages ago--I think we called it his chin widdle or something like that?

Anyway, people were talking how they thought that was cute, and then it turned into "Hey, even if he *were* a little chubby Jensen would look hot" which then turned into "Well, sometimes he's not completely hardcore toned, sometimes mid season he gets a tiny bit soft around the edges and I think its hot" and suddenly the J2 people were springing in with "Ok, so Jensen has to eat all this food as Dean and he starts filling out and it's worrying him but Jared likes it" and next think you know...Jub Jub Fest was born.

But then some people got all tweeked out and thought it was offensive (although keep in mind, nobody seemed to lose their shit back in the day when some poster said Jensen had lost weight and it was therefore proof positive that he was a coke fiend. Hell, it became a running Jensen joke for goodness sake!)and turned it into "People think Jensen is fat!" instead of what it *actually* was...people thinking Jensen would be even hotter if had a little pokeable belly. I mean hey--some of us like our guys a little more teddy bear than hardbody, ya know? I didn't see people going around saying, "Jesus, Jensen...you're disgustingly obese! Better schedule a gastro bypass before you flatten the Impala tires, Blobby."

Or at least that's been *my* Chubby Jensen experience--if people were using that to be mean, I never saw it. Because honestly, even the people posting to the Jub Jub community *know* he's not chubby. We just would love him even more if he were a bit squishy.

I know, right? Yeah, I think TIH looks like utter shit, you think it looks good, and I don't think we each think the other person is being disrespectful! And ya know, even though I think TIH looks crappy, it's not like I'm sitting here watching Merchant Ivory Films all the time. My "Lazy Sunday Rainy Day Bored Movie" that I go to every time? On the Line. Yes. I said it. The Lance Bass/Joey Fatone movie. I fucking went into a store and bought that. Soundtrack? Yes. So I know from crappy movies! TIH just happens to look like a crappy movie that doesn't appeal to me. If it pops up on HBO and I'm not doing anything and I'm too lazy to get On the Line down, then yeah, I might watch it. But just because I'm not petitioning to get it into theaters or anything is not a sign of disrespect. In fact, other than commenting here that I thought it looked cruddy, I haven't done anything to harsh anyone's squee who *does* think it's awesome.

And word to everything else. Including the ass shots! LOL!

It's not really a situation of anyone having their panties in a twist. Or about being anyone's mommy. Or about anyone thinking they're The Thought Police. Nor is it a specific response to criticism of Ten Inch Hero, or people's flustered blurting out of "Jensen could answer this better."

It's more a case of a number of us being aware of a lot of the crap that goes on in fandom (and in society in general) and being...well, appalled. As I posted last week, rarely does a day go by when I don't run into the situation of people doing exactly what they damn well please, regardless of whether it's inconsiderate, or rude, or illegal, or whatever. And the Internet contributes to that in a big way. There's so much anonymity built into it that a lot of people figure, "Hell, I can say anything I please" and hide behind a protest of "It's art" or "It's fandom" or just plain, "You ain't my mother, leave me the *&^% alone."

As someone who believes (and tries to put into practice) the theory of, "Life can be hideous...and the best we can do is be kind to each other," I signed on to Dodger's little tap on the shoulder just as a way of saying, "Remember." It's not specifically about Jensen and Jared. It's not a hidden way of saying "We hate certain kinds of fanfic." It is what it is: a way of saying, "Yo. Be good to each other." Because honestly, the idea of "Anything goes" being driven further and further all the time scares me. I've seen people's way of interacting go downhill just during my lifetime, so when the response to a request for respect is "You're weird" or some other form of wankery, it honestly makes me sad.

Except for the part where the icon and the post *are* all about Jensen and Jared. I mean, look at the icon--it's not "Respect: Because we *all* deserve it." It's "Respect: Because they deserve it." Under a picture of Jensen and Jared. I don't know how really someone could take that as anything other than being specifically about Jensen and Jared.

I mean really--if the thing was about "Respect your fellow fans!", then that message was *sooo* completely garbled and needs some serious beta-ing. Unless you're saying that was *your* specific reason and even if the whole thing was about Jensen and Jared it's not about that to *you*. Which is fine--but I'm talking about the original thing, not why people may or may not have joined it. Because the whole thing was so crazy grey that *anyone* could come up with a million interpretations.

I'm not saying Jensen and Jared don't deserve respect. I'm saying the cries of "ZOMG so mean to the boys!" comes off as an attempt to elevate fandom into something important to *them*, and frankly...it isn't. I can promise wherever each of them are now, what someone is saying about them on Livejournal is the farthest thing from their minds.

And if it *is* about Jensen and Jared, then dammit...people need to man up and start saying exactly what behavior they're finding disrespectful. Because you can't correct behavior if people don't know what behavior they're supposed to be correcting. And like I said yesterday, if it's "Everybody Gets a Trophy Day" in terms of who gets to wave the "I'm respectful" flag, then not a damn thing is getting accomplished if even the slowest kid in the class thinks he's a winner. Sure, it'd be great if that could be true, but we all know it's not. :)

I don't think there *is* a way to pin it down, because there are too damn many different viewpoints. What's really hideous to me is just fine with others. So I get what you're saying, and certainly there are a lot of people out there going, "Oh, for God's sake, crawl back in your hole and shut up."

For me, personally, the icon with Jensen and Jared is basically a kind of...a figurehead, I guess. I don't think they deserve mammoth amounts of respect any more than anyone else does. No, I don't think they give a great deal of thought to anything that's going on on the Internet. What's important to me is the word "respect" itself - because I think you're as worthy of respect as some actor I've spent 45 seconds with. In fact, I'd probably be more chagrined if I treated *you* badly than if I committed some faux pas with the boys, because you're more or less a member of my peer group and I consider you a friend.

Shannen, this is a great post.

Using that particular icon with Jared and Jensen on it ABSOLUTELY makes it about THEM. If the whole thing is about respect in general...take their picture off, just use a text icon.
